JPMorgan Falls to 49th in Top 100 Smaller Banks Outperform Wall Street Giants

WGA's Top Ten Banks Q4 2026

Whalen Global Advisors finds America's largest banks slipping in the rankings as investors reassess credit risk, rates, and exposure to other financial markets.

ESTERO, FL, UNITED STATES, November 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Wall Street's largest banks are reporting strong earnings, but Whalen Global Advisors' (WGA) proprietary ranking model tells a different story. JPMorgan Chase (JPM), the nation's largest bank, ranks 49th in WGA's Q4 2026 rankings, while smaller institutions lead.

The average stock in WGA's 102-bank test group declined 0.56% over the past 200 days amid concerns about interest rates, consumer credit costs, AI-related investments and private credit. None of the largest U.S. banks made the top 10. WGA's proprietary five-factor model combines fundamental financial and market measures to identify strengths and weaknesses that earnings or share-price performance alone may obscure.

“Despite the strong results seen from large cap banks in Q3 2026, the group continues to significantly underperform the broad market,” notes WGA Chairman Christopher Whalen. “Toronto Dominion (TD) is in the number one spot, followed by Bank of Montreal (BMO), Flagstar (FLG) and State Street (STT). None of the top seven depositories are in the top 25 stocks this quarter.”

JPMorgan ranked among WGA's top 10 in 2025, and its shares have gained approximately 14% over the past year. Its fall to 49th illustrates why size and share-price gains do not necessarily translate into strength across the model's measures.

Gold Withdrawals Add Another Dimension to JPMorgan's Story

In September, approximately 3.7 million ounces of eligible gold inventory were reportedly withdrawn from JPMorgan's New York COMEX vaults, according to analyst David Jensen. The withdrawals reduced stored inventory; they were not a trading loss for the bank.

Speaking at the Economic Club of Chicago in October, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon defended the security of gold stored in the United States, citing its geography, military and rule of law. The withdrawals do not explain JPMorgan's ranking, but the episode adds to questions about confidence in major financial institutions.Citigroup (C) gained approximately 21% over the past year but ranks 81st. Wells Fargo (WFC) ranks 27th and Bank of America (BAC) 73rd. Toronto-Dominion, ranked first, gained more than 50% over the past year and trades at approximately 2.5 times book value.

Whalen believes higher rates and bank exposure to AI-related credit and private lending are weighing on the sector. The AI selloff has raised questions about where institutional capital will move next.

“Energy, consumer staples, real estate and utilities are some of the few sectors that are up at present,” notes Whalen. “We exited our positions in several large cap names in Q3 and have since put down some short positions on consumer lenders based upon our belief that consumer credit costs are headed higher.”

The rankings raise a central question: are strong quarterly earnings masking risks that will emerge as credit conditions change?
